Five days after the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the highly anticipated title set an all-time entertainment record by grossing 550 million dollars. In it’s first day, it made 310 million dollars, shattering all previous records in the entertainment industry, both in the 5-day span, and release day spans. No surprise that Activision is pretty excited..

“In just five days of sell through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon,” said Robert Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc.  “The title’s success redefines entertainment as millions of consumers have chosen to play Modern Warfare 2 at unprecedented levels rather engage in other forms of media.”

The video game industry has never been so strong as now… The highest grossing film of all time is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince [well worth the hysteria] which had made $394m in it’s first 5 days. The second highest in the film industry is The Dark Knight, making $203.8m, followed uncomfortably close by Transformers 2, making $201.2m in the first 5 days. Although I’m a movie-buff and love seeing movies in the theatre, the fact is, I’m a gamer first, and seeing these statistics makes me happy. MW2 sold over 4.7million copies of the game in the U.S. and UK in the first day alone…

Microsoft also had some impressive statistics to give out. More than 11 million achievements were unlocked, and 5.2 million multiplayer hours were clocked in the first 24 hours of it’s release. Modern Warfare 2 also set the standard, making it a record to have 2.2 million games on Modern Warfare 2, at once. Impressive Infinity Ward…

So, the game sold extremely well.. Did anyone on the planet not expect this? There’s been controversy around every corner surrounding this game for the last few months, and now it’s all in frame.  What are your thoughts on Modern Warfare 2? Did it live up to the hype?
